Expats, please help us!

Updated: May 25, 2022

Flood victims are appealing for donations from South Africans abroad to help them get back on their feet.

Various organisations and individuals have been working around the clock for the past 5 weeks, struggling to cope with the compounding socio-economic factors. the impact following July 2021's looting and rioting, April 2022 heavy floods and further flooding across the Ethekwini municipality and neighbouring areas on the weekend of Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May 2022.

Lizzie runs Masibambisane Cato Manor. We sent her R1,150.00 on Monday 16 May 2022 which she used for 12 parcels that included teabags, milk, oats and other items.

A few expats, aka 'Saffa's', some originally from Durban, have already made individual contributions to flood victims. These donations have been greatly appreciated by organisations such as HOLAH (House of Love and Hope, Crestholme - serving Molweni & Madimeni), Nyema Foundation (central Durban), Masibambisane (serving Cato Manor), Tiny Steps Care Team (covering various locations) and individual's working within their communities such as Pastor Mthethwa in Molweni and Zazi Zondi in Tshelinyama (Marianhill, Pinetown) who have used the funds to purchase food and other essential supplies.

What can your donation do?

  • R80.00 (about £4.00) can buy a blanket

  • R100.00 (about £5.00) can provide a family with a hygiene pack

  • R110.00 (about £5.50) can buy a single mattress

  • R100.00 (about £5.00) - R200.00 (about £10.00) can buy a basic food parcel - either fruit & veg, or cupboard staples to help sustain a family for a week.

  • R500.00 (about £25.00) can help provide fuel for one of the many angels on the ground using their own vehicles to deliver supplies to the most vulnerable.

  • R2,500.00 (about £125.00) - R4.000.00 (about £200.00) can provide supplies to help a family fix or rebuild their homes in the informal settlement areas.

Durbanites are calling on expats to please consider making a contribution towards the ongoing relief efforts - £5 or $5 can certainly make a difference.

Founder of KZN Relief, Hayley Reichert has set up a Go Fund Me account to make it easier for those abroad to contribute. Please contact her on Whatsapp +447402929754 if you have any questions.
