Deadliest storm on record wreaks havoc on KwaZulu Natal

Homes, businesses, bridges, roads, humans and animals have been swept away this week in the worst floods on record in South Africa. A staggering 6 months rainfall fell in a few days. To date, by late evening on 13 April 2022, the official death toll stands at 306 with over 600 people reported missing.

Many stories being told of families being dug out of collapsed houses or found down river, many areas without water or electricity, due to collapsed or damaged roads, some areas are inaccessible, leaving thousands stranded and cut off from access to essential supplies. Many sleeping on floors of nearby village halls desparately waiting for help, some with injuries or other medical needs.

Disaster Relief Efforts

Extensive and urgent disaster relief efforts will be required over the coming days, weeks and months. Urgent appeals for fundraising and donations of large quantities of non-perishable food, baby and medical supplies, clothing, blankets and mattresses. Other needs include equipment and sustenance for emergency workers as well as contributions towards fuel and costs to transport supplies.

We are liaising with various organisations and community members on the ground to ascertain the needs across as many areas as we can, to help get supplies to those who are in need.

Please follow our social media pages and look up the various organisations on our website. If you are able to donate - financially or otherwise - please contact the organisations or local community members listed as points of contact directly or Whatsapp Hayley Reichert on +447402929754
